Day three has been the best day yet, though it started off rocky. Alex was about half an hour late and Yelena, who plays Courtney, was sick. I decided to just shoot around her. We’ve come to call it “detention” now when an actor will have to stay late with me to shoot some shots for another scene. Once Alex showed up, we applied the aftermath makeup to him and Charles (“James”). I used a Ben Nye bruise kit and some nose putty, as well as my personal blood recipe. The effects look amazing, especially in HD! Also, Alex is very much a method actor. We gave him a bruised cheek, but he said he didn’t feel injured so he asked me to punch him in the face. No joke! We shot the scene where the guys get back after the big fight where Olia was killed and the scene where the crew is finally able to trace the radio signal they’ve been hearing.
After shooting, we chilled for a bit and checked out what we had shot. Needless to say, it looked fantastic! The actors would notice how I had done certain things to give it that “Bourne” look. The biggest thing I did to achieve that was to constantly block the frame with another actor. I also made sure to get plenty of coverage of their injuries which made cutting a breeze.
Speaking of which, less than three hours after the actors left my place, both scenes had been cut. I really love the digital workflow. We have tomorrow off, so Saturday we’re shooting in downtown Spokane for the first time. We’ll be doing a bit of action, so I’m looking forward to that.
Here’s some pics from the evening:
